Hotels Near IISc, NCBS, JNCASR and GKVK: Distances, Transit and Extended Stays

Bengaluru's research institutions sit along the northern spine of the city, mostly on or near Bellary Road. If you are visiting for a seminar, a collaboration, a semester or a conference, the useful thing to know is not which hotel has the best photographs. It is how the campuses sit relative to each other and to wherever you are sleeping.

The northern research cluster

One clarification worth making, because search results routinely group these together when geography does not. The Indian Institute of Astrophysics has its headquarters in Koramangala, in south Bengaluru. It is not part of this northern cluster. If your visit is to IIA's main campus, a hotel in North Bengaluru means a long daily commute and you would be better served staying south.

Distances between campuses

Road distances, measured rather than estimated. Durations are free-flow, so treat them as a floor. Bengaluru traffic on the Bellary Road corridor routinely adds half again, and more at peak.

The pattern worth internalising is that NCBS and JNCASR are effectively one location, and IISc is a separate one about twenty minutes south of it. If your visit involves both, you will be commuting along Bellary Road daily, and where you stay on that axis decides how tolerable that is.

Getting around

Bellary Road, NH-44, is the spine. It connects the airport, Yelahanka, the GKVK cluster, and continues south towards Mekhri Circle and IISc. Almost all travel within this cluster runs along it.

On Namma Metro, the Green Line serves the Malleswaram side and is useful for IISc. The GKVK cluster is not directly metro-served, so the last mile is by cab or auto. Check the current network map before you travel, since North Bengaluru connectivity keeps expanding.

Cabs and autos are reliable along the Bellary Road corridor. App-based cabs work well, and availability is better near the airport end than deep inside campuses.

Several campuses also run their own transport for conferences and workshops. Ask the organising office before arranging your own, because it is usually simpler and always cheaper.

What academic visitors actually need

Institutional visits have a different shape from tourism or business travel, and most hotels are not set up for it.

The stays are longer. A visiting faculty appointment, a collaborative project or a sabbatical runs weeks or months rather than nights, which changes what matters. Laundry. A desk you can actually work at. Food that does not become intolerable by week three. A room you are not repacking every few days.

Quiet matters more than usual, because academic visitors work in the evenings, and a room designed for a one-night business traveller often has nowhere to sit and work properly. So does connectivity, for remote seminars, cross-timezone collaboration and large data transfers, which means asking about bandwidth rather than whether there is Wi-Fi.

Food flexibility comes up constantly. Long stays and international visitors both need vegetarian options as a default rather than an accommodation, with enough variety to hold up across weeks.

For conferences, group bookings matter. Symposia and workshops bring cohorts who should be housed together, because delegates who share a hotel talk to each other, which is substantially the point of a conference.

And airport transfers need to be predictable. International arrivals land at odd hours, and proximity to Kempegowda International is worth more than it looks on a map.

Staying at Le Roma Grandeur

Le Roma Grandeur is a 5-star business hotel at Singanayakanahalli, Yelahanka, on the northern Bellary Road corridor and on the same axis as the GKVK cluster.

There are 81 rooms, enough to house a conference cohort in one property, with extended-stay arrangements available for visiting faculty and longer collaborations. An AC boardroom seating 150 and an AC banquet hall seating 250 cover satellite sessions, workshops and poster presentations alongside a main campus programme. Two multi-cuisine restaurants carry vegetarian options as standard, with 24/7 room service. There is a gym, a pool and a sports bar for stays measured in weeks rather than nights, plus Wi-Fi, generator backup and parking for more than 200 cars.

If you are organising a symposium and need rooms plus session space in one place, that combination is worth a conversation. Housing delegates and running satellite sessions at the same property takes a daily transfer out of the programme.
